When the past bites (Part I) / Cuando el pasado muerde (Parte I)

When the past bites (Part I)
Cuando el pasado muerde (Parte I)
Weekly Report:: I'm almost fully installed at once was my grandfather 's workshop. I have electricity, water, internet and my medications. Although the financial problem is still present and sometimes I have trouble getting food (I wouldn’t  say no to some "food stamps"). I also had some problems with my last blog post, but it could have been much worse, because I censor myself.
When I returned from San Francisco (1994-95 ) where I was as a press attaché at the mexican consulate , I returned to my previous political group and got a job at the National Lottery as deputy director of International Relations. You may ask what does one do in that position, and the answer is basically nothing. So I focused on thinking about how to lead an "awakening of consciousness" in society. My goal to participate in a change in Mexico was stronger than ever. At that time I began to meet many people from the art and advertising circles of Mexico. In an evening gathering an opportunity to experiment with a bit of peyote appear (mystics say: look not for the peyote, peyote will find you, and it found me). I had a wonderful spiritual experience at first (Siddharta type): communion with Mother Earth and all creation. I felt interconnected with everything,I  felt the pain of Gaea, her children, life on the planet . It was an overwhelming feeling.
Over the days the feeling would not go away. Still felt everything. As if I had broken the code of the Universe. According to me I could see through time, see the essence of every being, its origin, its karma. And I felt like a man who was starting a mission. And I decided to take with me love, forgiveness and the great spirits that had influenced me (mainly Gibran and many others). The first task was to face myself. That was something really strong. At that time I did not know the "12-step program" (after a few years I met it and it seemed to me as something natural, logical), but it was clear that the first thing I had to do was face my ego, I had to get naked before Gaea, the Higher Power. I said to myself that I was only one point at a point in the vast universe. I was just "Aurelio Antonio González Quesada Sempé (and who the fuck knows what else). But still felt I had lost control, I could not handle it. I gave myself without hesitation to Gaea, the Higher Power. For me I was just a soldier of Mother Earth.

But to be that soldier I had to clean my conscience, my soul. So I made an introspective exercise extremely detailed about my past, my actions and my shortcomings. I wanted to achieve humility, put things in their proper perspective, know my limitations and weaknesses. The fact is that I got the "flatliner" effect as I termed it at the time because I felt something so similar to what happened to the med  students in the film. Suddenly I started calling everyone that I hurt and ask for their forgiveness. But there was something that I did that I could not amend. As a teenager some rebel friends and I used to go out in the car to what we called "penalize" ( we used to hit pedestrians with a belt). In one of these occasions it was my turn. I grasped the belt well and the guy who was driving got too close to the pedestrian and instead of hitting him with the belt, I gave him a blow on the shoulder with my fist, a dry thud. The boy fell. That action followed me for a very long time. It was hard to forgive me because I could not amend the damage. There was no way to find the boy. To date I remember what I did and I'm so embarrassed. But I had already given myself to Gaea, to a Higher Power to heal my defects or make them obvious to me when they appear. And from what I had read and heard from more evolved spirits, it was vital to forgive myself. It was hard to do, since consciousness is usually the most severe judge . (to be continued )

De regreso al lugar de mis primeros recuerdos / Back to the place of my earliest memories.

Back to the place of my earliest memories.

No quería regresar a México.
Yo no quería regresar.

Back to the place of my earliest memories.
I have mixed emotions now that I'm back to the place of my first memories . Here where I'm sleeping, it was my grandfather 's workshop, his refuge, where he worked wood, where he had his rock collection. The earliest memories I have were here, when I helped, passed time with him and learn from him. With him I made my first wooden car. My grandfather was the only true father figure to me. Some say that much of the personality , the character, is cast in the first 6 or 7 years. I came here when I was 3. And I owe a lot to my grandfather, because even though it was very brief my daily contact with him (3 or 4 years ), he marked me forever . He planted some ideas, a philosophy of existence that has saved my life on several occasions (and in others endangered me , because the man was very bold , fearless and I learn a little of that) and taught me so much empathy with the less fortunate in economic terms. He was Pediatrician and I can still see the image of the long lines of poor patients to see him. I think he did not charge them anything. He was a very dear person for the poor people.
Then my mother remarried a second time. From that experience I will not write it was very traumatic and there are several people involved I do not want to involve in this blog. Anyway, my mother got divorced again , then remarry a Mexican for her third time . My mother went before to Mexico with my two small brothers. My sister and I stayed at my grandparents' house. The day we left to Mexico was one of the saddest of my life. I still remember the scene when we got in the car and seeing my grandfather, we did not want to separate. It was very painful. I spent a year in Mexico and never could adapt, I was not comfortable. My brothers and I were like an undesirable load for the new stepfather. My grandfather 's health rapidly deteriorated in that year and we only managed to get to Costa Rica to watch him die. I could be with him 20 minutes before he died, the same day we arrived. I decided to stay with my grandmother (my mother figure). I hated my life in Mexico. I spent hours in my grandfather's workshop, where I am writing these lines. I used to explored his things, trying to use his tools. I felt great living here. I felt his presence. It was the only place where I experienced some sort of stability. Suddenly everything changed. My stepfather died run over. My mother wanted me to return with her. She convinced me with tricks and maternal blackmail (she was very good at it). So I went back to Mexico. It started one of the most difficult times for me. My mother gave me the role of husband. I slept in her room , my clothes were in the closet of my late stepfather. In short I was her husband, I have zero privacy. My rebellious stage started then. From been a good student and very athletic I pass to be a confused boy, without a compass, I was lost. Fortunately I had a circle of friends who were not like me, which prevented it me  from falling into a bottomless pit . I adopted a new family: The Sanchez family. If this family had not been there I probably would have precipitated in a uncontrollable rebellion.
A few years later, at 17, I left home with the hope to catch some friends who had graduated and went to Europe to backpack for a year. I started in Houston and ended up in Miami, working as a dishwasher, foodrunner,  daily jobs agencies , selling stuff on the street but did not make it to Europe. I did not want to return to Mexico. There was only instability waiting for me, I felt. I decided to turn to my grandmother and uncle (my mother's brother) and go to Costa Rica to my grandmother's house . But everything was different. Part of the house became the office of my Uncle; My grandfather 's workshop in a small apartment where my cousin used to live. I felt uncomfortable, unwanted. I felt like a second hand family member, resentful, I hated my circumstance, I didn't like it at all. Anyway, at one point an option appeared and I went to Miami (that's another story that I will address later).
Many years passed and as I was finishing my internment for my second psychotic break, the psychologist suggested I find a place away from my mother, because she was not emotionally well, neither one of my brothers, and probably I would get depress. I looked for the option to go with my biological father, as he has about 8 or 9 little cabins behind his house and I figured it was a good choice to start with some independence. But he turn his back on me. He didn’t want to deal with my illness. So I turned to my grandmother to go back to Costa Rica, the only place I ever felt some stability. But it was such a painful experience. After much effort I managed to conquer the famous workshop to get some independence. At that time I had three jobs. One in a brokerage house that lasted only a few months because the owner went  to jail. Then in an advertising agency, and I  didn’t disliked it but they did not pay me. And finally in a travel agency, work that could not sustain. It was an ordeal for me. And the boss fired me. Now I was out of money and, of course, my family in Costa Rica did not know what my bipolar condition meant. They did not believe in such things. One day I heard my grandmother talking bad about me on the phone with a relative. That I was good for nothing, that I would end up being a burden to my sister, etc .... It was a hard blow, for she was my mother figure. So I decided to make a kind of hunger strike, did not want to eat the food from my grandmother, I was truly shocked. Sometimes the office night guard gave me some food from my grandmothers’ and I swallowed the pride because I was hungry. A few weeks passed and my grandmother went to Mexico with my mother. In those days I was kind of the chauffeur of my uncle for free. Luckily I had a couple of friends that brought me some groceries occasionally. Finally I fell into depression, I felt underestimated, undervalued . At that time I considered myself as an artist, but a family member told me that what I did was not art and I took it too hard, it really affected me. Then there was a mess because of my state of depression and they put me in a clinic where I spent three months and had my third psychotic break. No one came to visit me. Just a friend of my grandmother, Mrs. Vicky H.
My grandmother came back from Mexico, and my father and mother managed to pay what was owed to the clinic and within a week I was back in Mexico. I did not want to return. I had a hard time conquering my grandfather's workshop and knew it was not healthy to return to my mother's house . But they threw me like garbage. Like a stranger, a tenant. I got kicked out of the place I considered my sole and last refuge. Obviously, in my return to Mexico I fell into depression. In addition there was no place for me in my mother's house. I slept on the couch and then with one of my brothers, he was so uncomfortable that eventually went to live with my sister. The depression was short-lived, as the 2000 mexican elections approached  and in a twist of fate I got a job at the presidency as head of international information ( I will tell that story later which represents more of the paranoia I have with the Higher Power quite often).
The thing is that I'm back in the workshop. The truth I was reluctant to return here. In fact I avoided coming. I have a scar that did not want to open again and I do not mean the memory of my grandfather. But for all that happened later. Also who knows how long I’m going to be here because the property is for sale and we're just fixing some legal issues . But hey, before I left the house in which my mother got coaxed, I concluded that part of this property is now legally mine, since my late mother had 25 % of the property . So the workshop is my parcel and I will not let myself be censored, repressed or received unsolicited advice regarding my refuge. Also I think, I feel, that there is now a little more understanding about my condition. Better to let the scar shut and let those memories alone. I do not think anyone wants to open the wound. Now what worries me is to become sort of attached to the workshop because the property will sell eventually . So I better get busy in the WORKSHOP,  enjoy it while it lasts because here I can unleash my creativity and not just digital, here I can get my paints and brushes out. Is a workshop that I have yearn  for so long. And either way, I have to take it day by day and if I have to have an ephemeral art workshop, where my beloved ghosts, my childhood are ..., well nothing, I will have to overcome, to let go that moment when it arrives.

Yo iba a acusar / I was going to accuse.

Yo iba a acusar
I was going to accuse

I was going to accuse
I left the house in which my late mother spent all her savings . The "gentleman" left us with nothing. My intention was to expose publicly the "gentleman" by name . But when it came time to do it, I just could not. I have not poisoned blood of revenge (and I really would like to have it) , because the damage was so hard. But I think his family does not have to be exposed by the outrages that made the " gentleman". I suggest -the " gentleman"- to persuade his son to go to a 12-step group for compulsive gamblers and seek professional help. That addiction is one of the most destructive , because not only undermines himself, but against the assets of his family. In this case , it was my family who lost all to pay the debt of the son of the "gentleman ". I do not know how I could avoid -given my bipolar condition- fall into a deep crisis. I only had a few falls for no more than three days.
I hope that a Higher Power (God, Chi , KI, the force, Cuatlicue, Zeus, Odin , reason, etc ... ) give me the grace to forgive that man . Because today I want every time he looks himself at the mirror -if he can see his own eyes-, everytime he sees his medal of the virgin will remember what he did. A family heritage that he destroyed advantageously and abusively. We invested $60,000 dls, my mother lived there for six months and I for two years . The honorable thing would have been for the "gentleman", given the circumstances, that he would have returned the money minus the rent for the months that my mother occupied the house. I spent 24 months in total  trying to regain some of the lost , that represents $ 24 000dls of rent  for a household of that type. The " gentleman" had a net profit of $36 000 dls. Not bad for a scammer. Apparently in the system that is a virtue unless you get caught. Oj-Allah (Hopefully) when he is in his beach house, between tequila and tequila, he will have an epiphany or a spiritual experience and repair the damage it caused to the extent possible . I doubt he has the honor ...
After more than a year of living stressed, in distress, trying to regain some of the lost (the die was cast at the time that my mother signed that contract so crafty). I vacate the house under my own will. I got no notice, but the situation was financially unsustainable for me. I lost the battle for inanition. And now I'm back to the house that owns my first memories . A re-start from scratch.

Solitude and my Bipolarity / Soledad y mi Bipolaridad

Solitude and my Bipolarity

Soledad y mi Bipolaridad

“My soul is my friend who consoles me in misery and distress of life. He who does not befriend his soul is an enemy of humanity, and he who does not find human guidance within himself will perish desperately. Life emerges from within, and derives not from environs”. Gibran

Yesterday the assistant of my late mother left to her village. Now I’m all alone in the house. Fortunately I enjoy my company. In fact I have the problem that I find it hard to be with people for long periods of time. Sometimes I can only do it for a few hours and I get the urge to return to my solitude, my colorful cell where, ironically, I find more freedom. Obviously there are exceptions. When you coincide with a great conversationalist time mutates into another dimension. If in addition to being a great conversationalist, is a woman that attracts me physically, time disappears,  does not exist. But that only happens to me occasionally. But it’s okay that does not happen often, so when it does happen is so sublime. However, I have a deep yearning to find that fellow conversationalist that will excite every particle of my soul and cell of my body. Maybe one of these days...

People who have bipolar condition are encouraged to socialize and the reason is clear: in my opinion, the absorption is very dangerous . Needless to say if you're on a bout of depression or mania . The risk of committing an irreparable act grows exponentially. I took that very seriously and I used to go to the gym, to swim and to a Yoga group. Besides improving my physical condition, one produces natural endorphins ( The well being drug ) and you meet interesting people. One can stop being the protagonist of your life or drama, to be just another actor of something much bigger. At the moment I have not the resources to carry this routine I had. But nevertheless TODAY ( tomorrow who knows ) I feel good, I'm not the center of the universe, and I am not overwhelmed by the problems that remain to be resolved (but right now that I'm finishing the corrections of this text, problems are appearing). The only thing that causes me discomfort at this time is to get out and leave the house alone, it gives me some paranoia with the "gentleman" of the house that he might do something nasty (for those not aware, I have legal trouble with the house where I live). So I am in a little dilemma: I managed to sell some things (my house is almost empty), now I have some money to pay a month at the public pool and I think I should go, it makes me much good. But I admit that I'm afraid to leave the house alone . So things are today...

PD . I am among those who think that there are mental disorders than entire societies suffer for historical, cultural, socio-economic, etc.,  reasons. And I feel that Latin Americans suffer much of a condition that is called "passive-aggressive". For example , being poor and Latin American is synonymous with being humble, that is a false syllogism. Humility has nothing to do with poverty. There is so much resentment, envy and evasion to face certain situations that many take a revenge strategy, to boycott in the dark, with a mean and arrogant attitude, instead of being politely assertive and communicate what they feel or think. I will not mention the names of the people around my life out of respect for their privacy and because this blog is primarily aimed at sharing my experiences, my history, my present within my bipolar condition, and also as therapy, as a personal catharsis directed especially to my peers, but open to anyone interested in the subject of mental health and Bipolar Disorder. I mention this so that if a family member, a friend feel particularly alluded to express it directly to me, assertively, so we can discuss the matter in a civilized manner to prevent passive - aggressive attitudes. This blog is public and feedback is more than welcome. But if I sense a banal comment with dirty intentions I'll delete it immediately. What I write is a sensitive and real matter.

No existe.

The truth will set you free? ¿La verdad os hará libres?

The truth will set you free?
¿La verdad os hará libres?

I offer my solidarity to those who are suffering right
now in Mexico from natural disasters
and the refugees, displaced and people
who are suffering violence in Syria, Egypt, Libya
and many other places.
Also for those who suffer in anonymity and solitude, the forgotten.

This week was again difficult. Yesterday they cut the electric power off. I had been unable to pay it for three months. Fortunately a woman, with whom I have no blood tie, and so often criticized by my mother and other members of my family gave me the money to pay the bill. I am grateful and indebted. In Costa Rica if you have no light, you can not even cook. Also, my grandmother who is now in Mexico with my sister, is rapidly into disrepair and lack of resources makes the situation so difficult ...
I confess I was quite altered by the situation. Maybe it's an accumulation of all the lies, denials that exist in my family. There is so much dirt under the carpet , or rather skeletons. I'm actually very tempted to open the  Pandora's box and test if it is true that " the truth will set us free." Provoque a family purging and beforehand suggest that everyone look for a psychologist to deal with so many uncover secrets that I would love to tell. My bipolar condition didn’t came out of nowhere. I have very heavy genetic load. If several of my ancestors lived at this time a high percentage would surely be diagnosed with some kind of  mental-emotional health illness. And if we add the external circumstances that I’ve lived in, plus my good or bad decisions I've made, the influences of films, writers, philosophers, artists, politicians, musicians, countries, cultures, friends, family, strangers and who knows how many more variables, all that has shaped who I am now , at this time and my bipolar condition .
But I feel that I have suppressed much information that sometimes is not enough to express it with my therapist . Denial and evasion has been the common denominator of most of my family. That damned logic of not wanting to face uncomfortable or criminals situations by fear of what people would say. In my case and personally I do not think I have nothing to hide, but I'm still digging with my therapist and by myself. But there have been situations in which I am directly involved but I could not publicly express it out of respect for the people who are also implicated. I do not know if I'm very polite, respectful and considerate but today I have wanted to scream from the rooftops how I feel and think about the truths that are buried so deep, the damage that some individuals have caused. To demand justice and the repairing of the damage. It bothers me deeply that some people enjoy a good reputation (which in fact is false), a life materially solved, abundant, when they have caused so much damaged . And worse, maybe they do not even know, because their unconsciousness is so pathological that perhaps they aren’t aware of it . Many will say that everything is paid in this life, that karma, that all we’ll have to answer before God , that no one is saved from the final examination of conscience. That I do not know. But in this situation I try to practice forgiveness but also demand justice. And if to obtain justice the truth has to come out, let it come out then, let´s leave the simulations. We must face our history, in my opinion.

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”
― C.G. Jung

PD . The entries titled " My First Psychotic Break " part I, II and III is a long story. Besides I have to write about 4 or 5 outbreaks, depression episodes and internments. So if someone can suggest an editorial or some method to publish my story "on- line" I would be very grateful .
