El Presente (7ma parte)/The Present (7th Part)
*Dedicado a mi madre/Dedicated to my mother

Present (the 7th part) / The Present (7th Part)
Three months went by and my mother showed signs that something was very wrong with her health. My work in the multilevel started to reveal itself as a fraud: the official opening in Costa Rica  was postponing month after month. To date the company has not officially exist in Costa Rica. The business contradicted his slogan "It's easy, simple is coffee." It was neither simple, nor easy, it was a torture to collect the product, you had to have an address in the U.S., had to register with a fake "social security" and to finish scrubbing had to file taxes in the U.S.. The guy who brought the bussiness told us that Costa Rica was in the top of the list for the opening, but nothing, in many countries opened the business, but not in Costa Rica. I could not lie on my presentations and I reach my limit, I lost all confidence in the people who brought the business. At the end I could only get 3 people into the business and decided to stop promoting the business at least until it was officially in the country. So there was no inflow of resources, we lived of the amount that my father send me to become independent. But soon we ran out of that money. In late March we were without resources.

Back then I use to buy my meds in traditional pharmacies. But we could not afford them anymore. I had to beg my mother, almost forcing her to affiliate on the Social Security Fund because one of my medications is expensive (Lamotrigine). Finally I convinced her and she joined the CCSS. That was a blessing because after month my mother's symptoms worsened. Her dr. sent her to have some blood tests and the results came out bad, she  had a severe anemia and we did not know what was causing it. The dr. send her  with an oncologist and she had an ultrasound. The result revealed a tumor in the colon, and a sample was taken, it was malignant. The oncologist (a merchant of health) told us she needed an emergency operation  at the Catholic Hospital (private). We told him that she was assured by the CCSS, but the pseudo doctor said it would take months, there was no time (it was a vile lie, because the Costa Rican public hospitals reacts immediately to emergencies). He probably wanted money for his summer vacation. Ordeal began: we had to ask for a loan with the car as collateral to cope, to pay for services, to eat. My family was not able to support us financially. We seek a second opinion from a  recommended oncologist of the Social Security and actually told us that my mother's condition was serious but it was not a matter of days. The comings and goings began to the hospital, she did all the tests required for a person with cancer: CT, blood tests, X-rays, etc. .. It also initiated a strong conflict among the doctors as the merchant oncologist did not want to lose the opportunity to earn money.
Finally it was time and she was hospitalized. What stressed out my mother the most was the situation of the house. Also had a hard time getting used to the public hospital, never stopped being "The Countess". She was not looking forward to the fight against cancer, she was tired of so much suffering, so much stress. She has long wanted to leave. But the passage of time recovered a little encouragement. I remember her in her hospital room with hes Citroen shirt, she loved her little car. My grandmother and I visited her whenever we could, we brought the magazines that she loved (“Hola”) and also some books. The doctors advised her to put her affairs in order, but nothing, my mother was always a disaster with legal and bureaucratic issues.

Finally and after two weeks the operation was scheduled for a Monday. They prepared her, she was taken to the operating room but they had to suspend it. Again came the merchant of health saying he had to operate, so he could charge the operation, and he would argue that she was his outpatient. Oncology chief suspended the operation and rescheduled for next Thursday. The operation lasted several hours and was complicated. We found that in addition to the colon tumor she had 40% of the liver with cancer. She spent several days in intensive care living off the machines. They had to re-intervene it to stop the hemorrhage in the liver. They had to leave her belly open to periodically wipe the bleeding. She spent a couple of days in intensive care and again another operation was scheduled because the bowel which housed the colon tumor did not regenerate, they had to cut that piece. But that operation could not be performed, her vital signs were too weak to withstand another intervention. The die was cast. That Friday we were allowed to enter intensive care and in a few hours my mother left, left asleep, no pain .....

PD. In July, I have to start paying the interest on the house and the  amount is $ 1.165 usd to spare more legal trouble. I've lost the business of the house, but a couple of people are interested in buying it, but they need time for them to get bank financing. Obviously I do not expect to recover the entire investment ($ 60,000 usd), but if at least a part that allows me to get out of the house and rent a decent space. So I ask you attentively if you can help with a donation, whatever, to raise that amount. Thank you for your solidarity!

El Presente (6ta parte)/The Present (6th part)

The Present (6th part)

As it turns out, as I was saying, my mother gave in to the insistence of the man who was selling the house. The argument of the seller, as I said before, was appealing to her maternal instincts, her good heart, as the son of the seller contracted a substantial gambling debt and that meant jail or worse (I did not find out that information months later). In my village that kind of favors, the risk that my mother took is a priceless debt. My mother didn’t warned us that she had already made a decision. She spent all hes savings and signed an abusive  contract without any financial institution to back her up without any guarantees of any kind. She was at the mercy of this man whom my mother deposit her trust, big mistake. She only had money enough to pay the expenses (utilities, food) for about 2 months. She had absolut confidence in this man with whom she made a commitment to buy the house. Well, he said he was going to support, That he  would be patient because my mother had explained many times that the purchase of the house depended on the payment of money that was owed to her from a pension in Mexico. The case is that we moved into this  house at the end of October 2011.

I continued with my plan to become independent, so I attended many meetings of this coffee MLM company to learn the business. To make it short it was set to program your  hard drive of your brain with the information required to deliver the business to all your contacts, to anyone who got in your way. It was like putting "play" to a cd and say or write the same damn thing over and over again to infinity kind og “ad nauseam”. These trainings were accompanied with self improvement supermarket therapy. The funniest thing is that sometimes they put a video of the "coffee lifestyle" and dude appear driving a BMW in the French Riviera. Obviously that is very effective as it appeals to the desire of almost all human beings to have a life free from financial worries and if by the way you can live like the rich and famous, what could be better. Of course I wasn’t convinced by that “lifestyle" they were selling, I just wanted a decent income to devote to what I like: my job and my need to express myself as an artist, exercising, occasional affordable luxury and if possible conquer that woman I liked. The truth is that long ago my material aspirations are reduced to basics and a little more, nothing else. So my goal was to build a network of consumers of coffee with ganoderma (It is a good coffee and ganoderma it is very beneficial to health) and find a couple of natural sellers to my network. But I was clear from the beginning that such sales is not mine type of job, but I was willing to sacrifice a reasonable time to achieve the goal (how I remember the book "Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller). Well, I got to work hard on that.
2012 was beginning and I in a fit of greed, naivete and trust in the company leaders decided to do an "upgrade" that cost me $ 750. I already had the funding that my father had sent me. But my plans to become independent collapsed. My mother ran out of money and I was not going to leave her by herself. So the money I was going to spend to leave my mother I spent it on household expenses. Fortunately, with the change of home, I had to change the gym and there was Yoga and the instructor was just what I was looking for. So I continued with therapy, medication, exercise, had a "job" and had the Yoga factor. So the failure of my plans to become independent did not discouraged me, I simply postponed them. Also given the physical, mental and spiritual state I was in led me to have a more than bearable relationship with my mother. I was reborn again (as I've had many resurrections in this life), so I was full of love, without resentment, without blame or blaming  anyone else. I mean, I felt again that had the power of responsibility for my own life, my freedom. And without being  pretentious or condescending, I suddenly felt for my mother brotherly love, as she was my younger sister, so I was much easier to cope with her mood swings, stress about money, resentments, anger and sadness because of  the death of my brother; She could never overcome that. (To be continued)

PD. In July, I have to start paying the interest on the house and the  amount is $ 1.165 usd to spare more legal trouble. I've lost the business of the house, but a couple of people are interested in buying it, but they need time for them to get bank financing. El Presente (5ta parte)/The Present (Part 5)

El Presente (5ta parte)/The Present (Part 5)

The Present (Part 5)

I continued my routine of therapy, exercise, medications (stabilizer and antidepressant) and a healthy diet. Never had I felt so good physically, I think since sixth grade. I forgot to tell you that I am a smoker and consumed 10 to 15 cigarettes a day before the cardiovascular problem. I could reduce the dose to 3 or 4 a day. Smoked only the ones  that I really enjoyed: after lunch, another in the afternoon with coffee and finally the reflective one at night.

My mother and grandmother returned from Mexico. There was a fairly stable situation in financial terms. But I needed to get resources to become independent, because both my psychologist and I knew that living with my mother was not good for me; because my mother suffered from depression and neurosis, was very troubled, I feel she was emotionally immature, besides it was vital to retry independ myself, of course. The problem is that I still could not renew my residence (in fact yesterday I went to migration and they told me to wait another month, dammit). Some friends and relatives only spoke of the "call centers" and the truth is that I got the cramps just thinking about being cooped up in a cubicle for hours in a monotonous job. In any case I had no residence and both my psychologist and I resolved that it was not the  kind of work  I needed. I could be in risk of getting depressed.

A few days passed and I was very lively, so I started trying to seduce a school classmate. I sent her emails to ask her for suggestions about eating habits. I tried to get into her life. One day she invited me to a coffee business. I did not know what it was, but I would have bought her canned air.  So we attended to a business presentation and voila, I got in. Invested $ 550usd that I borrowed from my mother. And I thought I just killed two birds with one stone, I will get closer to the woman I liked and got a flexible job and it seemed a great opportunity and did not need residence. It was my first experience with a MLM company and gave them the benefit of the doubt.

I was excited and motivated. In those days my mother, brother and I went to see homes in the area and found the house in which I currently reside. There began the story of harassment between the dude of the house and my mother. But I still had the firm idea to become independent, so I asked my father to financed me with $5000usd from a savings of $ 30,000usd that it was supposed to be reserved for myself. And I thought it was time to take the risk and ask for a portion of the savings to take off. After explaining in detail the plan to my father and after the lecture he gave me about why i needed so much money, finally he agreed, but did not touch the money from the savings that were supposed to be meant for me, apparently he did it out of his personal savings, do not know actually.
Weeks passed, and I began to work hard in the multilevel-company business of ganoderma coffee. Surely many of you reading these lines received several invitations from me and saw multiple posts on FB about it. After a couple of months the dude convinced my mother to engage with the home despite warnings that my brother and I told her. But she had the support of my grandmother. About the same time I received the money I had asked my father. I invested $700usd more in the coffee business, as it seemed feasible at the time to earn between 3k to 2k per month. And also had frequent contact with the woman I liked. Things looked very well, but soon the plan went to hell, it was only a mirage. (To be continued).

El Presente (4ta parte)/The Present (4th part)

El Presente (4ta parte)/The Present (4th part)

The Present (4th part)

Well folks, I followed the directions to the letter and resume my therapy with my great psychologist (I admit that I have no way to pay her everything she has done for me) and helped me pass that trance easily, but she was concerned that I suspended the antipsychotic, but I still keep taking the stabilizer and antidepressant, also she had the phone of my psychiatrist for any eventuality of a crisis of mania. With regard to exercise instead of 4 days a week, I was doing six. I invested 3-4 hours a day. I was doing spinning, weight training, aerobics, cycling went out and walked, then ran and walked and finished running. I took the drugs and followed the diet religiously. I still had to find a Yoga studio. I couldn’t find a good place a that time.

The two months passed and it was time to go back to do the laboratory for the blood tests. I went to the lab and I told the Dr. that I was hoping my blood would be normal after all the effort I had done. The Dr. looked at me skeptically and said it would be a miracle if the triglyceride and cholesterol levels were normal. That I should be content if the triglycerides go down considerably. I left sad, with few expectations. When I returned in the afternoon for the results I found the Dr. with a face of astonishment, she looked puzzled. She said that she repeated the tests two times, because she did not believe the results. She reported that my blood was fine, that all indices were within the normal range. Test passed. I went to the cardiologist and also he was also surprised; He told me that I could eat whatever I wanted and to continue taking the drug for a month by reducing the dose and continue with that lifestyle.

Finally, that scary situation had a positive effect: depression disappeared thanks to a humanistic therapist (who thankfully is not fought with psychiatry), a good diet, exercise and medication. In two months lost 10 kg. I felt very good physically, mentally and spiritually. I was just missing the Yoga factor. These 2 months ended just in time to assist to a meeting to celebrate 25 years with my school mates. I studied with them only half of the 5th grade as a listener and sixth grade normally of elemantary school. For me it was very important that meeting because I had no friends. I needed to socialize. Many I did not recognize or they didn’r reognize me, others never knew (because they came when I left to Mexico) and with several  it was a wonderful reencounter. They received me with love and we had a great time. I laughed a lot remembering so many things, like when I declared to a mate, she said yes and then I could not talk to her again. Well folks, I still have to tell you a little more to contextualize the "Present". Continue in the next one.

PD. I think I got in trouble with the car. I have lost confidence in the guy who took it. Good thing I have not given any power. I'll have to talk to the trustee to see how we proceed.

El Presente (3ra parte)/The Present (3rd part)

El Presente (3ra parte)/The Present (3rd part)

Y pues me puse a buscar cardiólogos.

Llegué a pesar 93 kg., nunca había pesado tanto.

The Present (3rd part)

Ok people, I return to the entries titled "The Present". As I said I was alone with the Mrs. who has attended my mother for years. One morning I went biking. I rode three blocks when I felt a deep pain in the chest and left arm. I had to get off the bike and walk to a crawl to the house, which was in Villa Colón, Costa Rica. The discomfort was intense. That was a Friday and any effort I made as climbing stairs, go to the bathroom, or downstairs to eat, the pain reappeared. I wrote my "father" who suffers from heart problems (I think he has had a couple of operations) and nothing, did not answer. By Sunday I was really worried so I went to the Red Cross in Villa Colón and I took an electrocardiogram and it was normal, but the dr. said it was urgent to go to check on me because it could be a heart angina. So I started to look for cardiologists. I remembered that my father had spoken of a Costa Rican cardiologist who lived in Mexico in a guest house with him. It took time, but I found him through the internet. We talk, I told him the symptoms and he referred me to a colleague. I made the appointment a matter of urgency and I attended. He made me an electro and took my blood pressure and he suspected  that it could be a heart angina. He sent me to do some blood tests and gave me an appointment for next week.

I went in for blood tests to a laboratory in Villa Colón and was told to come back in  the afternoon for the results. I wentf and the dr. had a frightened face and I therefore also was scared. And it starts to report the results, and my blood was made a mess, totally contaminated, the matter was very delicate. In Mexico triglycerides had a rating above 3000, but when i got to Costa Rica i stopped taking the drug for lack of money and ignorance. On this occasion the triglycerides were in 1456 and cholesterol was in 456. The blood was thick and milky. The risk of cardiovascular problems was very high; also i had the possibility of having a brain stroke because of  the density of the blood.

As I still had to wait for the appointment with the cardiologist I started buying CardioAspirin, because every night I had the fear of dying in my sleep. I started researching the side effects of the drugs I was taking. I found that Olanzapine (an antipsychotic), altered metabolism, affecting the functioning of the liver and therefore I had gained weight. I got to 93 kg., never weighed so much. I talk to my psychiatrist of Mexico and she said it could be but rather I was very scared because I didn’t know what was happening, but to continue with the medication. I decided to stop. Later my father answered, scolding me because why  i had written that shit about the trouble I was having; That  if I wasn’t not aware of his health, he could not handle that kind of news. Seemed to me just a normal comment, I thought it was logical due to his expertise in that, anyway...

The day came for the appointment with the cardiologist. I did a stress test, an echocardiogram and fortunately there was no visible damage, no obstructions. However the Dr. told me my blood was in an alarming state and we had to tackle the issue aggressively. I commented that I had suspended the antipsychotic because of the side effects, so we agreed in taking that chance. He prescribed me a  medication to lower triglycerides and cholesterol. The diet was infamous: zero carbs, no dairy, fat, sugar and beef. He also told me to start exercising at least four days a week and come back in two months. I will tell you in the next post the results.
